Wi-Fi is great in most circumstances. It allows to have a wireless connection as far as your router can reach. However, it does have some drawbacks. Wireless is prone to interference. If you were to google wireless interference, your search results will show a long list of things that can cause wireless issues. Anything from brick walls, microwave ovens, your neighbor's Wi-Fi networks, baby monitors, and the list goes on. For someone that is a heavy data user, Wi-Fi may not be good enough. Sure your bandwidth speed may be great. You may have subscribed to 50 Mbps Internet service and expect super fast speeds. This is definitley more than the average user needs. However, Bandwidth may not be the issue. Latency could be slowing down your connection and your Wi-Fi network will have a higher latency than a wired connection due to the interferneces.
The amount of Bandwidth you have determines how much data can be transferred per second. Latency on the other hand is the delay. Latency is how long it takes for data to transfer from its source to its destination. So while you may be able to transfer a lot of data with you 50 Mbps connection, the delay for that transfer to reach from the source to its destination may be slowing you down. This is most often noticed when video chatting with someone or while playing online games. Ever vidoe chat and find yourself talking at the same time as the other end user? Or maybe played a first person shooter game and noticed the enemy was gone before you even have a chance to shoot. These are both examples of Latency.
If this is an issue you regularly experience, it may be better to have a wired connection. Cable Network Solutions can help. We can run Cat5e or Cat6 cable from your router or switch to the location of your networked device. This will create a better connection and significantly reduce the Latency you experience. Whether you just need one Ethernet run or multiple locations, Cable Network Solutions can help keep you connected. Call us today to schedule an appointment at 513-310-3740. cablenetworksolutions.com
